Maple Ridge has 2,000 film industry employees, one of B.C.’s top locations

The City of Maple Ridge is reworking its film policy and fees, after council reviewed a staff report noting the city is attractive to film crews.
The industry reportedly contributes to the local economy and employs approximately 2,000 local people, said the city’s film coordinator Draeven McGowan.
The city ranks fourth in B.C., with about 6.5 per cent of all on-location filming activity in the province happening here.
The report noted the city “consistently hosts an array of productions,” averaging 110 per year, including feature films, TV series, and commercials, adding up to 350-400 days of shooting.
It’s a sector of the economy that brings an estimated $5.4 billion to the province’s GDP, McGowan noted.
Council reviewed the issue on Dec. 5, then on Dec. 12 endorsed its updated film policy, and approved three readings of its new fees and charges bylaw.
