Back in Her Field

March 15, 2021

Esperanza arrived in Canada with her husband and two children in 2013. In her home country, she had worked for 10 years in accounting.  Limited English has made finding work that matches her skills, education and experience impossible and she has been working as a production worker. Esperanza focused her time in recent years on her English and when she thought she was ready, she came to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre. She was very eager to get assistance to re-enter her professional career in accounting.

Esperanza participated in several WorkBC services. She attended workshops and gained essential job search skills and received one-to-one support to update and polish her résumé and cover letter to ensure it was effectively marketing her for accounting related positions.

Her WorkBC Employment Placement Specialist (EPS) helped Esperanza customize résumés and cover letters, and worked with her to prepare for interviews.  The EPS also marketed Esperanza directly to a number of potential employers offering wage subsidy incentives.

With this support, in less than two months, Esperanza was offered a job as an accounting clerk! Her new employer is very understanding and has adopted strategies and approaches to support her learning and ensure her job success. Esperanza is very thankful for this opportunity and is delighted to be back in her field!
