Bernadeth’s Journey to a Fulfilling Career in Early Childhood Education
August 30, 2024
Bernadeth, an immigrant to Canada, had spent 10 years as a Nanny Share and another 10 years as a secretary in the Philippines. While her background demonstrated dedication and versatility, she faced significant barriers to entering the Early Childhood Education (ECE) field in Canada. Without valid ECE certification, an up-to-date resume, or strong interview skills, Bernadeth struggled to secure employment in her desired field. In addition to these challenges, she experienced lower back pain, limiting her ability to take on physically demanding roles like long-term care.
Seeking guidance, Bernadeth turned to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre for support. During her intake assessment, she met with a Career Coach who recognized the need for upskilling and essential skills enhancement to overcome her barriers. Together, they developed a customized plan to address her challenges, including:
- Participating in workshops on resume and cover letter writing.
- Improving her interview skills.
- Exploring education and certification options to meet industry requirements.
Recognizing her passion for ECE, her Career Coach identified a Project-Based Labour Market Training (PBLMT) opportunity in partnership with the YWCA and Sprott Shaw College. With encouragement and guidance, Bernadeth applied, was accepted, and excelled in the program, graduating with strong marks and the qualifications she needed to enter the field.
Following her certification, Bernadeth was referred to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Employment Placement Specialist (EPS) for job search support. Through direct employer marketing, the EPS secured her a five-day substitute opportunity at two local care centers. Bernadeth impressed both employers with her skills and dedication, leading to a full-time position as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE). She now works 40 hours per week, earning $25 per hour, in a role she loves.
In Bernadeth’s own words:
“I am grateful for all the support I received from WorkBC. I am now working full-time in a job I love, making a difference in children’s lives.”
