Erica’s Journey to a Meaningful Career Through WorkBC Maple Ridge

October 14, 2025

When Erica first walked through the doors of WorkBC Maple Ridge, she was a single mother facing significant challenges. Precariously employed at a local grocery story with no clear pathway for advancement, she was under financial pressure and uncertain about her future. On top of this, Erica was managing personal barriers, including Dyslexia and mental health concerns, which made envisioning a sustainable and fulfilling career all the more difficult.

This wasn’t Erica’s first interaction with WorkBC. Back in 2016, she had received support to attain a position as a food counter attendant. But now, as a newly single parent, she was ready to pursue a long-term career path that would provide both stability and the opportunity to grow and to support herself and her son.

Erica was connected with a dedicated career coach, Tracy, who took the time to understand her needs, goals, and the unique barriers she faced. Through a career exploration workshop and the DRENA (Disability Related Needs Assessment) process, Erica gained clarity about her strengths and the types of work that would suit her personality and abilities.

“When I first started with WorkBC, I was scared because I didn’t know what job field I wanted to get into,” Erica shares.“I really enjoyed the career exploration workshop. I discovered jobs that I would be good at and my colour (Blue-Gold). My career coach got to know me on a deeper level with the disability assessment. This made me realize what kind of jobs I can do and I felt supported.”

Upskilling and Empowerment

Recognizing Erica’s interest in early childhood education, WorkBC Maple Ridge supported her with Short Duration Training funding, enabling her to become certified as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECE-A). The team also provided assistance with:

  • Digital literacy and job search skills
  • Creating a professional, targeted resume
  • Practical guidance on approaching daycares and marketing herself to employers
  • Balancing school, child support, and study time

“I liked picking out the schools and having discussions about child support and scheduling to ensure I could study at home and have supports to help with my study,” Erica explains.
“I also learned how to draft a resume that marketed me to daycares. I received help on how to approach daycares and pitch myself to these daycares.”

A Brighter Future

Erica successfully secured a part-time position as an ECE-A at a childcare facility, initially covering a maternity leave, with the potential for a permanent role. She now has a career pathway that offers both personal fulfillment and financial stability.

“I want to thank my career coach, Tracy, and Daniel who did my assessments, as well as Joe and Ralph who facilitated the workshops,” she says.

Thanks to her perseverance and the tailored support of WorkBC Maple Ridge, Erica has not only overcome significant barriers but has also taken meaningful steps toward a stable, rewarding career.
