From IT to Office Administration – A Journey of Resilience and Career Transition
December 29, 2024
When this client first approached the WorkBC Maple Ridge Centre, they were facing significant barriers to re-entering the workforce. An immigrant with a background in IT support, their education from 2007 in India no longer aligned with the current demands of the industry. Compounding this, a long gap in employment, health challenges, and the need for reliable daycare further complicated their job search.
Exploring New Opportunities
Through personalized Case Management Services, they worked closely with their career coach to assess their skills, interests, and options. Realizing the difficulties of re-entering the IT field due to the competitive labour market and outdated qualifications, they explored alternative career paths.
During career planning, the client discovered a growing demand for childcare professionals and recognized their transferable skills could be a strong asset in this field. With encouragement and guidance from their WorkBC team, they began researching the requirements for childcare roles and exploring potential opportunities.
Steps to Success
WorkBC provided Priya with the tools and support needed to transition into a new career:
- Resume Updates: the client’s resume was revamped to emphasize their transferable skills and highlight the client’s suitability for roles outside the IT sector.
- Industry Exploration: They were connected to an employer in good standing with WorkBC, allowing the client to enter the childcare field.
- Training Support: WorkBC facilitated Short-Term Occupational Certification (STOC) funding for Emergency First Aid, a critical requirement for the client’s new role.
- Wage Subsidy: The Employment Placement Specialist collaborated with an employer to secure a wage subsidy, creating an opportunity for the client to gain valuable experience.
Securing Employment
The client secured a position with Kids Club as an Office Assistant and Responsible Adult. This role allowed her to leverage their administrative skills while gaining valuable experience in childcare. Over time, their dedication and hard work led to a promotion to Full-Time Office Administrator.
Thriving in a New Career
This client is now employed full-time with BC Christian Academy in Office Administration. More than 52 weeks into their role, they have not only achieved stability but also demonstrated the resilience and adaptability that define their journey.
