From Underemployment to a Career in Early Childhood Education
January 13, 2026
After arriving in Canada, this newcomer client faced significant barriers to securing meaningful employment aligned with their skills and education. In her home country, she worked in office administration and held a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic Translation. In Canada, however, the client was underemployed, working part-time as an on-call cashier at a grocery store.
Challenges Identified
- Lack of recognized Canadian credentials
- Underemployment and limited career advancement opportunities
- Resume and cover letter not targeted to the Canadian labour market
- Low confidence with interviews
- English language skills at LINC Level 7
The client was referred to career planning services at the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre, where she explored viable career pathways aligned with her interests, transferable skills, and labour market demand. With guidance from their Case Manager, the client researched two potential options: Medical Office Assistant (MOA) and Early Childhood Education (ECE).
A Pathway to Skills Training and Certification
After careful consideration, the client chose to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education. With support from WorkBC, an application for Skills Training was submitted and approved, enabling the client to attend Ridge Meadows College. The client successfully completed the ECE program, obtained their professional license, and remained engaged with their Case Manager throughout the process.
Ongoing Case Management and Employment Supports
Following training, the Case Manager provided continued support, including:
- Resume revision to reflect newly acquired ECE skills and credentials
- Short-Term Occupational Certificates (STOC), including First Aid and Food Safe
- Referral to a Job Developer for enhanced job search assistance
Given the client’s recent graduation, WorkBC also offered a Wage Subsidy, creating an opportunity for local employers to hire and onboard the client.
Successful Employment Outcome
With the combined support of WorkBC services, the client secured employment with a local daycare operator, marking a successful transition from underemployment to a career aligned with their training and long-term goals.
Reflecting on their journey, the client shared:
“I am so thankful to have known WorkBC Maple Ridge. Your team changed my life and helped brighten my future. Special thanks to Daniel and Fereshteh for their patience and great advice throughout this journey.”
