Melissa’s Path to a Fulfilling Career: A Maple Ridge WorkBC Success Story

January 31, 2024

Melissa, a graduate of Pitt Meadows Secondary School in 2002, started her career as a Labourer at Harvey Install Blinds and Screens. Although she worked there until 2005, Melissa found the role unfulfilling and did not gain many transferable skills. Despite her willingness to work, she faced years of unemployment and struggled to secure stable employment.

During this time, Melissa stayed active in her community, volunteering for organizations such as Big Brothers and Sisters, Cythera Thrifts Boutique, and Golden Ears Retirement Centre. Her volunteer work, especially assisting seniors with recreational activities, reinforced her passion for helping others and her desire to contribute to the well-being of some of the most vulnerable members of society.

The Turning Point: Support from WorkBC

In December 2022, Melissa was referred to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre’s Customized Employment Services. During her initial meetings, Melissa expressed her aspiration to work in seniors’ care and gain the skills necessary to support residents in care facilities. She also noted the importance of staying physically active to maintain her health and energy levels.
Melissa’s Employment Placement Specialist (EPS) collaborated with her to create a customized plan for achieving her career goals. With the Centre’s support, Melissa successfully completed certifications in First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Safe Level 1. These qualifications were critical in building her confidence and employability.

A New Chapter Begins

After completing her training, Melissa’s EPS arranged an interview with Maple Ridge Seniors Village to explore supportive employment opportunities. Recognizing Melissa’s dedication and potential, she was offered a position in the Housekeeping Department. In this role, she assists with housekeeping duties and laundry, providing essential support to residents and staff.

Over the past year, Melissa has excelled in her position. Working over 30 hours per week at a wage of $21.85/hour in a unionized environment, she reports significant improvements in her health and family life. Her employer’s recognition of her hard work and passion for seniors’ care has opened new doors for her career development. Melissa has been accepted into the Health Care Assistant Program offered by Maple Ridge Seniors Village, a step that will enable her to further her career in seniors’ care.

Reflecting on Her Journey

Melissa’s success is a testament to her resilience and determination, as well as the comprehensive support provided by the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre. Through customized employment services, on-the-job coaching, and training, Melissa has found a role that aligns with her passion and values.

In her own words:

“This employment is the best thing that ever happened to me. I have a real passion for working with seniors, and I love coming to work every day.”
