Motivated and Keen to Find Work
June 28, 2021
Marion is recognized for being hardworking, motivated and reliable. She has some mental health issues which have caused cognitive challenges and academic barriers and have made finding employment a struggle since graduating from high school in 2016.
Marion found the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre on her own. Although she hadn’t been able to find paid employment, she had volunteered for different community agencies and events and assisted her elderly family members by providing support and care. She came to the Centre very keen to find work.
As a first step, Marion was guided to complete a Disability Related Needs Assessment and a Psychological-Vocational Assessment and Discovery to determine her interests and strengths. The results indicated that Marion has good computer skills and is a very pleasant and positive person who happily takes on daily activities including housework and cooking. She was willing to explore a variety of work options and to learn new things.
As connecting with employers had been a challenge for Marion, our WorkBC Employment Specialist approached the HR Manager at Superstore on her behalf. This local Superstore has a long history of supporting individuals with disabilities. After meeting Marion, they were keen to offer her part-time work. The environment is supportive and inclusive and Marion is learning new tasks every shift!
Marion started her job in March 2021 and has received support from the Centre to maintain it. She is successfully working and providing general store assistance and is responsible for replenishing supplies, organizing items on shelves and ensuring cleanliness and safety in her work environment.
Marion reports that she is loving the opportunity, that everyone is treating her very well and that she continues to be well-supported.
