Never Give Up On Your Dreams
March 11, 2021
In 2019 Louanne had to leave her job as a Patient Care Coordinator for health reasons. Due to her health, an inconsistent work history, limited network of support and a lack of relevant post-secondary education, Louanne struggled to get back into the workforce. Louanne worked to her overcome health issues and build some good professional and personal supports; she was ready to set career goals and build a plan. Louanne came to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre motivated by a desire for change and knowing she needed career planning, training and job search assistance.
Louanne had always wanted to be a nurse and the career exploration and assessments she completed with her Career Coach confirmed this. With support from her Career Coach, Louanne submitted an application and successfully obtained funding to be trained as a Health Care Aide. Her Career Coach was encouraging and stressed the importance of Louanne maintaining her network of support to ensure ongoing good health and success in her training. Louanne, despite challenges including the pandemic, worked closely with her Coach and to maintain the supports she had put in place.
Louanne graduated with honours and was immediately hired as a Health Care Aide at a seniors’ care facility! As a bonus, the facility is near her home – so no commute!
In Louanne’s words:
“I went to WorkBC with the determination to better myself. With the support and guidance, I was able to achieve my goal of becoming a Health Care Assistant. I will say that the process was not easy, but my case manager, Kathy, fought for me every step of the way and was my biggest advocate.
I could not have done this without Kathy’s support and encouragement, and I am proud to say that not only did I complete the program, but I achieved high honors and was hired on the last day of my clinical experience.
The moral of the story – Never give up on your dreams, there are angels at WorkBC who can help you achieve your dreams!”
