Success Story: Louise’s Journey to Reignite Her Career as an Event Coordinator

October 30, 2024

At 64, Louise faced the daunting task of re-entering the workforce after dedicating the last 14 years of her life as a caregiver for her aging parents. Married and without children, Louise had a rich background as a glass artist, teacher, and event contributor for film festivals in Edinburgh and Vancouver. Yet, she found herself living in a mobile van, grappling with financial hardship, outdated skills, and a lack of confidence in today’s labor market. Despite these challenges, Louise was determined to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time Event Coordinator.

Louise turned to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre for guidance and support. From the outset, the team recognized her potential and tailored a comprehensive plan to address her employment-related challenges, which included:

  • Developing an up-to-date resume and honing interview skills.
  • Gaining knowledge about the current labor market.
  • Enhancing her digital literacy skills.
  • Navigating the challenges of housing instability and financial constraints.

Through the Encore Career 55+ program, Louise received personalized job search support, digital skills upgrading, and one-on-one job coaching. She attended a variety of employment workshops that helped her explore career directions, make informed decisions, and refine her application materials. Mock interviews provided her with the confidence to present her unique experiences effectively.

With her Career Coach’s guidance, Louise created an action plan with manageable, measurable steps. The WorkBC Centre also connected her with Dress for Success, where she received professional work outfits to prepare for her new role.

The hard work paid off when Louise secured a part-time position as an Event Services Coordinator at the ACT Theatre in Maple Ridge, starting on October 23. This opportunity not only aligned with her passion for events but also offered potential growth into full-time hours. Starting at $20.70/hour, Louise is thrilled to be back in a professional environment, pursuing her dream career.

In Louise’s words:

“I’ve been out of the labour market for many years while being the primary caregiver to a parent. I felt that all my previous skills and education were of little value.
Since I walked into the WorkBC Resource Centre, with very little confidence and no expectations, all the people I have met there have been so supportive and so non-judgemental. They’ve listened and offered positive choices and options based on my personal circumstances.

Oh, and they don’t hang around, they make things happen for you.
I walked into the Resource Centre six weeks ago and it’s been a whirlwind! Workshops, resumes, job fairs, and accepted on to Douglas College’s Encore Career 55+ program. With everyone’s support I now achieved my dream job as an Event Services Coordinator! My future feels exciting!

I really would encourage any one to walk in to WorkBC and start the process, especially those who feel they no longer have anything of value to offer or the the skills necessary to find meaningful employment. You do and they’ll help you realise that.”
