A Life Changing Program

Janet, originally from the Philippines, is a young single parent with development difficulties. Her mother, who had received WorkBC services previously, suggested Janet go to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre for help. When Janet came to the Centre, she only had Grade 10 high school and very limited work experience. Given her circumstances, Janet needed considerable support to find meaningful and sustainable employment.

At the Centre, Janet completed several assessments to help her understand her skills and abilities and assist her to determine an employment path. She also obtained Short-Term Occupational Certification and completed an unpaid work experience.

Janet’s work experience was hosted by a graduate of the Douglas College Self-Employment Program who successfully opened her own business – Creative Cove Holistic Childcare. During the work experience, Janet completed her Responsible Adult and First Aid Training. At the end of the work experience, she was hired by Creative Cove.

When Janet was asked about the services and supports she received from WorkBC Maple Ridge she said: “This program changed my life. I now have a meaningful career and I love my job!”
