Building a Sustainable Career Through Accessible Training and WorkBC Support

September 14, 2026

After an unexpected layoff, a Pitt Meadows resident is taking steps toward a new career in audio production and voice performance, with support from the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre.

Finding a New Career Path

When the client lost their job in June 2025, returning to employment presented significant challenges. Living with permanent disabilities that affect mobility, vision, hearing and physical strength, they require an accessible working environment and opportunities to work remotely. Transportation limitations further restrict the types of employment they can pursue.

The client saw an opportunity to rethink their career direction and build on their existing interests in voice acting, audio production and media. They identified BCIT’s Radio Arts and Entertainment Associate Certificate as a pathway to develop professional skills in sound design, podcasting, freelance production and broadcasting. However, tuition, specialized software and professional audio equipment presented financial barriers to pursuing this training.

How WorkBC Made a Difference

The Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre worked closely with the client to develop a training plan that aligned with their career goals, physical limitations and accessibility needs.

Through individualized employment support, the WorkBC team:

  • Provided financial assistance: Helped the client navigate the funding application process and approved support for BCIT tuition, required software, professional audio equipment and other training-related expenses.
  • Coordinated accessibility supports: Worked with BCIT’s Accessibility Services and program staff to explore remote participation and appropriate accommodations.
  • Supported a flexible training plan: Helped coordinate a course schedule that accommodates the client’s physical limitations while meeting the certificate program’s requirements.
  • Focused on long-term employment success: Supported a career pathway that builds on the client’s existing interests and experience while developing the technical skills and industry connections needed for future opportunities.

This coordinated approach helped address both the financial and practical barriers that might otherwise have prevented the client from accessing occupational training.

Looking Ahead

The client is preparing to begin BCIT’s part-time Radio Arts and Entertainment program, with the goal of establishing a sustainable career in post-production audio while continuing to pursue professional voice-acting opportunities.

For the client, returning to school represents more than retraining. It is an opportunity to pursue meaningful work that accommodates their physical needs and supports a longer, more sustainable working life.

Reflecting on the support received, the client shared:

“WorkBC helped make that opportunity financially and practically accessible. I am incredibly grateful to Karoline, Tessa, and the entire WorkBC team for their patience, advocacy, and hard work throughout this process. Their support has allowed me to move forward with confidence and begin developing the skills I need for a sustainable future in audio production and voice performance.”
