From Surviving to Thriving: A Single Mother’s Journey to Career Success
May 12, 2026
Recently a Maple Ridge WorkBC client shared her career development story. This story demonstrates the impact of the services and supports provided by WorkBC.
Before connecting with WorkBC, I was a single mother relying on income assistance. I faced significant challenges finding meaningful employment without the education and certifications many positions require. Most of the opportunities available to me were entry-level roles, which weren’t enough to support my daughter and me.
Through WorkBC, I was introduced to the Single Parent Employment Initiative (SPEI), a program that assesses individual circumstances and provides eligible participants with funding to return to school and gain valuable certifications. With their support, I completed the Administrative Office Specialist program and earned my certificate.
As a result of this support and training, I am now employed as a clinical technician and administrative receptionist, roles that have allowed me to build a stable and rewarding career.
The staff at the Maple Ridge WorkBC location were incredibly welcoming and supportive throughout my journey. Joe, Lisette, Tracy, and Ana Liza were especially helpful, and I’m truly grateful for their guidance.
As part of this journey, I also attended the Career Planning with Assessments workshop, which helped guide me toward a career in the administrative office field. I received guidance and support researching occupations, the labour market and various training institutions. I made an informed decision to attend Ridge Meadows College to complete the Admin Program and upon completion, I was connected with an Employment Placement Specialist who supported my transition into the workforce, including securing a position through the Wage Subsidy program. Once employment was secured, additional support was provided for appropriate work clothing and transportation. I continue to receive ongoing support and check-ins from the WorkBC outcome team. Thanks to this comprehensive training and guidance, I am now gainfully employed as a clinical technician and administrative receptionist.
Through the help of WorkBC, I feel more confident applying for jobs, more optimistic about my future. I am confident about my long-term employment future whereas before I was only short-term focused trying to get by day by day. Now I am forward-thinking and working hard to create an impression for a good reference for the future.
