A Wonderful Career Starting Point!
August 26, 2019
With career planning support, job search and Essential Skills training provided by the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre, Regina Lee was able to successfully complete her Early Childhood Education Certificate. Although qualified, she was still a little unsure of her English and needed assistance to obtain her first job in Canada.
On Regina’s behalf, a Maple Ridge Employment Placement Specialist approached CEFA Meadowtown to set up a Wage Subsidy Work Experience placement. The placement was set up in less than a week!
A component of WorkBC work experience placements is that the placements are monitored and coaching is provided to both the host employers and the participants. Any issues that emerge are remedied, and Employment Placement Specialist works with the candidate and the employer towards the goal of transitioning the placement to long-term sustainable employment. In this case, CEFA reported that the wage subsidy and the support had been a very useful. The subsidy reduced some of the financial burden of orienting and training new staff. Without it, they stated that they would not have been able to hire a person directly out of school who needed additional language skill development.
Now, CEFA is delighted with Regina, and for Regina, CEFA is a wonderful career starting point. “I love the children. I love working here. It is great training. It’s a great environment and I feel very safe. I’m excited as there is more training to come.” The WorkBC Employment Placement Specialist continues to provide on-going monitoring and coaching to support the employer and new hire with the goal of sustainable employment at the end of the work experience. Everyone is sure this will happen!
