Overcoming Barriers: Damian’s Journey to Employment
June 29, 2026
Damian achieved a major milestone by securing his first paid, part-time job through the tailored support of the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre.
The First Step
On February 4, 2026, Damian visited the WorkBC Centre with his Job Coach to explore employment services. As an Indigenous youth (aged 25) living with Autism and a speech disorder, Damian was eager to transition into the workforce but faced unique barriers to entry.
Collaborative Planning
During the intake meeting, Damian actively participated and shared his educational background and preferred learning styles. Working closely with a WorkBC Career Coach, he completed career assessments that identified his strengths and interests. The exploration led to two promising paths:
- Warehouse operations
- Customer service
Targeted Marketing and the Wage Subsidy Program
To turn these goals into reality, the team referred Damian to an Employment Placement Specialist. This specialist provided:
- Direct marketing to inclusive local employers
- One-on-one employment coaching
- Access to the WorkBC Wage Subsidy Program
The Breakthrough
A local employer expressed interest in Damian’s profile and requested a working interview. WorkBC staff quickly coordinated the logistics, allowing Damian to demonstrate his skills in real-time.
The working interview was a success. The employer extended a formal job offer, fully supported by a wage subsidy through the Opportunity Fund.
Ongoing Success
Damian is now successfully employed. The Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre continues to provide regular coaching and mentorship to ensure his long-term integration and growth in the workplace.
