Ali’s Journey: Overcoming Barriers and Building a New Career in Canada

November 30, 2024

Ali, a 20-year-old newcomer to Canada, arrived in February 2024 with a dream of building a better future for himself and his family. Originally from Afghanistan, Ali worked as a Server and Supermarket Cashier. Upon arriving in Canada, however, he found himself facing significant challenges. As the only English speaker in his family of seven, Ali bore the weight of supporting them financially while navigating a new culture and job market. With no Canadian work experience and limited resources, Ali turned to the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre for help.

Support Tailored to Ali’s Needs

During his initial meeting with the Centre, Ali shared the financial pressures he faced and his determination to find stable employment. The WorkBC team immediately connected him with vital resources, including income assistance, English upgrading courses, and the Newcomer’s Guide to help him acclimate to life in Canada. Recognizing Ali’s potential, his career coach, Jessie, developed a personalized plan to enhance his employability and build his confidence.

Through WorkBC’s workshops, Ali gained invaluable skills, such as crafting an elevator pitch, marketing himself to potential employers, and excelling at job fairs. He also received ongoing one-on-one coaching, helping him to identify opportunities that aligned with his career goals.

First Steps into Employment

Ali’s first job in Canada was a part-time position as a Team Member at The Barley Merchant. While it was a significant milestone, Ali and his career coach quickly realized it wasn’t sustainable for his long-term needs. Together, they continued exploring other opportunities, leveraging WorkBC’s resources and connections to broaden his options.

A New Opportunity with Walmart

Through email notifications from WorkBC, Ali learned about an upcoming job fair. With his refined resume and interview skills guided by the Resource Centre Advisor, Ali attended the event with confidence. His efforts paid off when he secured a full-time position as a Grocery Associate at Walmart.

The Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre further supported Ali by funding the purchase of steel-toe shoes, a requirement for his new role. With both his part-time job at The Barley Merchant and full-time role at Walmart, Ali began to feel a sense of financial stability and pride in his growing Canadian work experience.

Looking Ahead

Today, Ali is optimistic about his future. The support he received from the Maple Ridge WorkBC Centre has equipped him with the tools, confidence, and experience to continue building his career. Reflecting on his journey, Ali shared:

“I came to Canada in February 2024. At the beginning of my employment path, I faced a lot of challenges. I could not find a job because I did not have any Canadian experience. WorkBC helps us to grow our career paths. My career coach Jessie helped me to participate in job fairs. Currently, I feel much better because I don’t feel overwhelmed anymore.”

Ali remains connected with the WorkBC Client Success Team, who continue to provide him with ongoing support during his first year of employment. His resilience, combined with the guidance and resources from WorkBC, has paved the way for a brighter future for both him and his family.
