Another WorkBC Maple Ridge Success Story!

August 26, 2019

Regina immigrated to Canada with her husband and two children from Korea in 2005. When she came to WorkBC, she had few connections to her new community and no Canadian job qualifications. Her employment goal was to work with young children. Although she had five years-experience caring for elementary school age children, she was not certified and needed to improve her English language skills.

With the support of WorkBC, Regina built greater connections to her community and learned about her occupation and the local labour market. A Career Coach assisted Regina to build a career plan and she attended employment workshops to further her plan, learned how to conduct a Canadian job search and strengthened her confidence. As a part of her career plan, she also completed Essential Skills training at WorkBC to ensure she would successfully complete her Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses. By the end of the Essential Skills training Regina had raised her levels by a total of 103 points – a significant improvement in all skill areas. Regina was able to complete all her ECE training and has now graduated with an ECE certificate!

Although Regina was well-prepared to be an ECE worker, she was still not feeling totally confident in her job search. To overcome this, her WorkBC Employment Placement Specialist assisted her to obtain a job placement with CEFA Early Learning Meadowtown. The placement was supported by the Wage Subsidy program; Regina has thrived within the experience and her employer was delighted with her and the program. Regina recently shared with her WorkBC Coach: “I am happy to say that I have a job offer from CEFA Early Learning Meadowtown. Thanks to your support, I can start my new career as an early childhood educator. WorkBC gave me a good direction.”
