Oksana’s story of employment success since arriving from Ukraine

When Oksana and her family arrived in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program, she faced many hurdles. A married mother of two young children (ages 7 and 5), Oksana was a self-employed accountant in Ukraine with a background in business administration. She had also worked in a grocery store and as an insurance agent. However, starting over in Canada with limited English skills, no professional or personal network, and no local job experience presented a significant challenge.

Challenges

Oksana’s new life in Canada came with multiple barriers. She faced financial pressures, lacked access to affordable daycare, and struggled with her job search due to unfamiliarity with the local labor market and her limited English. Without a Canadian-style resume or cover letter, she found it challenging to market herself to potential employers. Additionally, she did not have a BC drivers’ licence, which further limited her options.

The Role of WorkBC Maple Ridge

In March 2023, Oksana connected with WorkBC Maple Ridge and was accepted into case management. Through this program, Oksana gained access to valuable community resources, including BC Income Supports, which eased her transition from Ukraine to BC. The WorkBC Centre provided her with job search assistance and training to boost her skills. She obtain her Food Safe, First Aid, and Responsible Adult certifications improving her employability considerably.

Case management also included resume and cover letter creation, which equipped Oksana to approach job opportunities with greater confidence. Recognizing her interest in working with children, her employment counselor supported her through short-term and long-term goal- setting—first aiming for a position as a kitchen helper and eventually working towards a role in childcare or accounting. With the support of her WorkBC case manager, Oksana enrolled in LINC courses to improve her English skills and gain more professional confidence.

Employment Placement Support

With a clear goal of working with children, Oksana was referred to an Employment Placement Specialist, who helped her with interview skills and connected her with local daycare providers. Through the Wage Subsidy program, Oksana secured a two-month contract at Little Willows, gaining invaluable hands-on experience with children. This initial placement ultimately paved the way for her to secure permanent employment at BCCA Kids Club in July 2023.

The Wage Subsidy program played a vital role in Oksana’s journey, allowing her new employer to offer her a supportive environment to learn and grow while managing her family’s financial needs. On October 31st , 2024, Oksana obtained a permanent position with BCCA Kids Club. She is working with children—exactly where she dreamed of making a difference.
